Caring for your Ferret
If you have already purchased a ferret or are thinking about purchasing one, you must consider how much time it will require to care for them. Ferrets are exotic animals that come from the mustelid family. This means they do tend to have an odor when they reach adulthood.
De-scenting and neutering your ferret would be a good choice if you are not breeding them. You can reduce the ferret odor by de-scenting and neutering them when you purchase two or more
Ferrets also need to see the veterinarian for their vaccinations; it is always a good idea to bring any newly purchased animals in for a regular check up.
You can purchase high-quality food made just for ferrets in any local pet store. Any brand of food you choose should have at least 35% protein and 20% fat. Ferrets require higher fat levels than felines. With a better blend of essential fatty acids, balanced fats like poultry fat are healthier for ferrets.
Your ferret should always have fresh water available. Ferrets will drink less water from bottles than bowls. But if you are unable to wash & change the water bowl at least once a day, then a water bottle is a better choice for you. Your new pet will also need a ferret-proofed house.
Make sure the cage you buy is safe, easy to clean, and roomy. The spacing of the cage is important. If the ferret can force its head through any part of that cage, it is in danger. Make sure the cage you purchase has no areas where your ferret’s feet can get caught.
Ferrets love to play and run around. If they are not placed in a proper cage they will get hurt. Ferrets really love dark padded areas to hide in and they usually sleep 15-20 hours a day. Sleeping sacks and hammocks are great for both sleeping and playing. Also, you can try placing a sheet over one part of their cage in order to give them a nice, quiet and private place to play or to sleep.
Ferrets love to chew things; anything within a ferret’s reach can become a hazard to your ferret. You should check your ferret’s cage regularly for anything that is damaged or chewed on.
If a ferret happens to eat the wrong thing it can cause an intestinal obstruction, and will need to be removed surgically. Ferrets can be social. You should wait to introduce ferrets to people until they are 30 days old.
You should let your ferret out of their cage at least twice a day, in a ferret proof room. Never leave your ferret outside their cage unattended. They are at risk of getting hurt. If you can handle your ferret more often it is better for training.
This will help them interact with you. Ferrets just love to cuddle and it really feels nice when they do it with you. Ferrets can be trained to use a litter box. The earlier you start litter box training the better the success rate.
Ferrets are a fun and loving pet, remember the more you interact and care for them the longer & healthier life they will have.
