Why Agility Training Goes Hand in Hand With Dalmation Training
Most dal owners are in for a surprise should they want to go for a KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme. Indeed, the dog is not only pure energy and brawn, but brains too. But they are even in for a more exciting surprise if they decide to get their dog into agility. It may sound too cliché, but there is no denying that this dalmation training activity helps build a solid and fun relationship between owner and dog, not to mention boosts the dog’s confidence.
In the case of you and your dalmation, agility classes are still good even if you do not wish want the dog to compete, but simply wish to have fun. Along the way, there are many training tidbits to learn and absorb. And at the very least it is a good follow up to the good socialization skills that has been inculcated in the dog when it had its GCDS.
The skills the dog picks up at agility will be very useful in its daily interaction with you and in obedience, since most of the tasks are about recall and send aways, stand-waits, stops, and turns.
Obviously, nearly all dog breeds can tackle agility, but even then, many people do gape on seeing that a fair amount of dals participate at various levels. A dal snaring a Champ class may be still be a a far off possibility, but agility is certainly among the best motives for going out; moreover, you get to bond with the family dog. Nevertheless, some dal owners are not going to take lightly the fact that dogs are not created equal in terms of talent and skills. And so in other words, Dalmation owners are definitely keen on participating in ABC classes and events in their neighborhood (ABC representing “Anything but a Collie (or collie cross)”).
Of course, the dog generally keeps the same idiosyncrasies when most of the dalmation training is done: eating eyebrow raising stuff, running around the ring countless times, or just plainly skipping every other command from its trainer. Be warned too, about a dal that the moment it learns how to jump, will want to practice jumping over anything and everything. But whether or not it can match the track record of the hordes of retrievers and collies is another story.
