Wireless Training Collar Containment System Guide

As our new puppy started maturing, she gradually began to roam freely around the neighborhood. He’s not really an aggresive dog. Therefore, we never thought it would be a problem.

Scenario: A sloped irregularly shaped yard on a stony hillside. Sure I could bury an underground fence wire if I used small dynamite charges, I thought I’d try the wireless approach first though.

I programmed the units to match the yard, ie, one unit at the skinny part of the yard is on less than full power so it gives coverage in the yards and to the street, the other unit is at full power so it gives as much coverage as possible into the wide part of the yard. This one also covers the driveway on the front of the house.

Since first installing the system, we’ve added two dogs to the household. The system has worked flawlessly. Because of the audible beeping sound from the collar when a dog breeches the parameter, we never had to buy another collar. When training a new dog, other already trained dogs can hear the tone and respond accordingly. This is a good thing since additional collars cost >. We also still have the original nylon collar that came with the unit, so there’s no complaints with that.

The other day, I noticed that he wasn’t going into one of the zones. I checked the fence, and it had stopped working. I opened it up and discovered that the fuse had blown. I replaced the fuse, but it blew the new one too. The box for the Instant Fence claims a lifetime warranty. I called Petsafe and they are sending me a new one free. All I have to do is return the old one within 2 weeks of receiving the replacement.

I bought my first Instant Fence about 2.5 years ago and I bought the other two just about a year ago. Since I did not know which unit was which, Petsafe assumed that one of the newer units needed replacing and sent the new transmitter for free. Petsafe’s warranty is for free replacement for the first year and only dollars after that. The representative with whom I spoke was courteous and professional. This company knows how to take good care of its customers.

My teenage son took the collar out to the perimeter and put his hand in the collar to try it out because he was concerned about the shock, but found it to be a mild static kind of shock on his hand.

I read that someone else had trouble with not knowing when the battery is low. I had the same problem because my dogs periodically tests to see if the fence is on. Petsafe now has a new collar for the Instant Fence that is smaller, has multiple levels of correction, and has a low battery warning light. They are sending me a new collar with the new unit. WOW!!! I also noticed on their website that they have upgrade programs, but the cost for upgrading the Instant Fence collar is not listed.
